Tallinn Black Nights Unveils Winners for 2024 Edition

Mongoliaโ€™s โ€˜Silent City Driverโ€™ takes Grand Prix; awards span six competitive sections.

The 28th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival concluded on Saturday, November 23, with winners unveiled during a closing ceremony at the Alexela Concert Hall in Tallinn. Prizes were awarded across six competitive sections: Official Selection, First Feature, Baltic Film Competition, Criticsโ€™ Picks, Rebels with a Cause, and DOC@Pร–FF.

In the Official Selection, the Grand Prix for Best Film, carrying a โ‚ฌ20,000 prize from the city of Tallinn, went to โ€œSilent City Driverโ€ by Sengedorj Janchivdorj. The filmโ€™s producers โ€” Ganbaatar Narantsetseg, Naranbat Bayasgalan, and Bold Ganbat โ€” share the award.

Best Director went to Nir Bergman for โ€œPink Lady.โ€ Claudia Becerril Bulos received the Best Cinematography prize for โ€œEmpire of the Rabbits,โ€ which also picked up Best Script for director Seyfettin Tokmak. Acting awards went to Hyo Je Lee (โ€œThe Loopโ€) and Pirjo Lonka and Elina Knihtilรค (โ€œ100 Liters of Goldโ€). The Best Original Score award went to Alyana Cabral and Moe Cabral for โ€œSome Nights I Feel Like Walking,โ€ and Best Production Design was awarded to Munkhbat Shirnen for โ€œSilent City Driver.โ€

In the First Feature section, โ€œNo Dogs Allowedโ€ by Steve Bache took Best Film, with a โ‚ฌ5,000 prize shared between the director and producers. Diego Figueroa won Best Director for โ€œA Yard of Jackals.โ€ Jury Special Prizes were given to the ensemble cast of โ€œMongrelsโ€ and to โ€œCiao Bambinoโ€ director Edgardo Pistone.

The Baltic Film Competition awarded Best Film to โ€œSouthern Chronicles,โ€ directed by Ignas Miลกkinis. Best Director went to Laurynas Bareiลกa for โ€œDrowning Dry.โ€

In the Criticsโ€™ Picks competition, Best Film was awarded to โ€œThe Brothers Kitaura,โ€ directed by Masaki Tsujino. Best Director went to Dechen Roder for โ€œI, The Song.โ€ A Special Mention was given to โ€œFishgirlโ€ by Javier Cutrona.

In ‘Rebels with a Cause,' โ€œProtected Men,โ€ directed by Irene von Alberti, took Best Film. Best Director was awarded to Ruiqi Lu for โ€œContact Lens.โ€

The DOC@Pร–FF competition awarded Best Film to โ€œThe Watchman,โ€ directed by Victoire Bonin and Lou de Pontavice. Best Cinematography went to Linas ลฝiลซra for โ€œMurmuring Hearts.โ€ โ€œBlack Goldโ€ received a Jury Special Prize.

The FIPRESCI Award was presented to โ€œMongrels,โ€ directed by Jerome Yoo. The Audience Award, carrying a โ‚ฌ3,000 cash prize, went to โ€œPyre,โ€ directed by Vinod Kapri.
